"Networking" How beneficial will it be for Palliative Care? This topic ignited active discussion at the 18th Conference………………..
A tweet on the 18th International Conference of the Indian Association of Palliative Care on 12th February attracted a group in a far away country and they re tweeted within hours! "Wish we were there" was the comment by the International NGO- IMAXI- started by patient's living with HIV, TB and a couple of IT Wizards. Its members are from four continents working with a mission to maximize access and increase civil society involvement in public health issues through the innovative use of new i-tools. "A conference in Lucknow in India attracted like minded people working with similar vision in different continents within hours, through an easy tool, and that is the power of the social media tools" said Mr. Gopinath Parayil , social entrepreneur and one of the founders of "niti consulting- sustainable development solutions ,Bangalore,India" in his speech in the conference on "Social Media Tools for effective networking" . His talk inspired participants to experiment the networking technology for palliative care. The session concluded with a call to explore adopting social media as one of the tools to network amongst peers and share knowledge to bridge islands of excellence. The session also suggested exploring possibilities of a collaborative wikie in Palliative Care.
The theme of the conference which held from 11 to 13 February 2011at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow was "Networking" and the conference discussed various networking strategies.
The presentations vary from networking with local people and government agencies to support an isolated HIV patient in one of the rural villages in Thrissur district of Kerala to networking of palliative care at the corporate level – an experience from Bangalore.
The success story of Neighborhood Network in Palliative care in Kerala, experience of networking with other groups to build the hospice attached with Christian Medical College Vellore, Organisational networking in Palliative care -experience of World wide palliative care Alliance (WPCA) were a few among the networking experiences shared in the conference.
The conference was inaugurated by Mr. M. K. Gupta , IAS, Execise Commissioner of Uttarpradesh. Nearly three hundred delegates and faculty members from different countries participated.

Declaration
The conference concluded with a declaration aimed at influencing the government of India to frame a National Palliative Care Policy. The declaration also called upon the government of India to take necessary steps for making the availability of morphine in all states.
Moving towards a National Policy on Palliative and End of Life Care
The conference has decided to work for a National level policy on Palliative and End of life care. Dr. Stanely C Macaden , sought the attention of the conference in this regard . The general body of IAPC held on 12 February 2011 at Lucknow decided to work to achieve this goal.
IAPC to Follow up MCI directive on MD in Palliative Medicine
The general body of Indian Association of Palliative Care has decided to follow up on the MCI directive recognising MD in Palliative Medicine. A committee was formed to follow up further on this issue and also been entrusted to develop a draft curriculum for MD in Palliative Medicine, in India.
Pre- Conference Workshop
The pre conference workshop with two parallel sessions was held on 10 Feb 2011 at Chhatrapati Shahuji Medical University, UP, Lucknow. The work shop was inaugurated by Prof. Saroj Chooramani Gopal , Vicechancellor of the university.
The session on "Research and Communications is the key of networking" was lead by Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar, Head of the Department , Department of Anaesthesiology , AIIMS, New Delhi and Dr. Rajashree Suresh of Pain and Palliative Care Soceity , Kozhikode , Kerala lead the workshop on Communication skills.

Bruce Davis Gold Medal in Palliative Medicine Presented
Bruce Davis Gold Medal in Palliative Medicine 2010 was presented to Dr. Kapil Sankar from Kerala at the inaugural ceremony of 18th International Conference of IAPC by Mr. M. K. Gupta , IAS, Excise Commissioner of Uttarpradesh. The Bruce Davis Gold Medal Examination is a national level examination in Palliative Medicine for young doctors in India being organised by Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode, Kerala. The award includes the Gold Medal, a citation, and cash award of Rs. 25,000. Read more in bdgm.blogspot.com
IAPCON 2010
The 17th International Conference of Indian Association of Palliative care concluded at Tiruchirappalli with the “Declaration on Care of the elderly”

More than 450 delegates from all over the globe participated in the three day conference. The focus of the conference was “the Care of the Elderly”
The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Mayil Vahana Nataragan , the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. M. G. R. Medical University on 12th February. The Vice-Chancellor said that a one-year Fellowship in Palliative Care would be introduced soon .
A special Postal Cover in Commemoration of the conference was released in a function held as part of the conference. S P Rajalingam , Post Master General, Central Region , Trichi released the postal cover which was received by David Prail , Chief Executive of Help the Hospices and Chairman of World wide Palliative Care Network, UK.
The Pre Conference CME was inaugurated by Dr. KalaiSelvi, The Dean of Chennai Medical College, Trcihy and Dr.T.Mohanasundaram the organizing secretary welcomed the gatherings. Mr.David Prail Spoke about the Global Propect of Pallaitive care. Dr.Suresh Reddy of M.Anderson University , Houstan USA Chaired the CME programme.
Dr.M.R.Rajagopal and his team lead the CME for the Doctors, Mrs.Gilly Burn and Team for the Nurses, and Dr.Rajashree and team for the Social workers and Volunteers.
