Training programmes in Palliative care offered by various institutions.

FELLOWSHIP IN PALLIATIVE MEDICINE

The Fellowship in Palliative Medicine (FPM) is a distance-learning programme for doctors in India, which is jointly organized by Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM), Calicut, Kerala, India and Christian Medical Association of India.

The programme was launched in 2004 August. Since then 38 candidates have completed the course. The course has one-year distance learning curriculum with an initial introductory session, which includes theory classes and brief clinical exposure and clinical placements for 30 days. There is continuous evaluation through out the course followed by a final assessment at the end. The candidates will receive the modules from the resource centre (IPM) by post and they have to submit the assignments based on the module in time either through mail or by post. There are ten modules, which covers different aspects of palliative medicine
The candidate has to finish two clinical placements of ten days duration in each of the two institutions, which are recognised, for this purpose before the final examination. This is in addition to the introductory session of 10 days, which also will be considered for the clinical placement.

The candidate has to submit a logbook and a duly completed project at the time of examination. The subject for the project work should be an area related to palliative care

The evaluation method includes evaluation of assignments (30%), clinical placements as reported by the mentor of the institution where the candidate had attended (20%), log book (15%), project report (10%) and the final examination (25%).

The candidate has to secure 50% marks in each division for a pass

If the candidate fails or he/she does not complete the assignments / clinical placements / project in time, they will be given one more year to complete after which their registration stands cancelled.

The FPM course now has APL (Accreditation for Previous Learning) by Cardiff University (UK). This will allow those who have done the FPM to join the Cardiff three-year M.Sc programme at the diploma level i.e. with exemption of the first year certificate level. However they will have to include an audit project during the diploma year.

The programme commences in August every year and the prospectus and application forms are available from CMAI office at New Delhi from April onwards on submission of demand draft of Rs. 100/ drawn in favour of ‘Christian Medical Association of India’ payable at New Delhi along with the complete postal address of the candidates. A Course Fee Rs. 30000/- will be payable by every candidate.
