Here is an article written by Ms. Ammu Joseph- Independent journalist and author Does Jyoti Basu deserve what he is being put through at age 95? Are the medical professionals responsible for his well-being at this stage of life doing him a favour with their interventionist approach? Invasive tests were still being conducted despite concern about the impact of “needle-pushing” on the veteran politician’s now-frail body. A few days ago a specialists’ panel being consulted on the case reportedly admitted that Basu’s age was against him. It is interesting, in this context, that the team of consultants does not seem to include a palliative care specialist. Unfortunately the concept of palliative care is still not widely known, understood or accepted in this country .If the medical profession as a whole does not appear willing to acknowledge it as a legitimate and increasingly relevant discipline, the general public can hardly be faulted for harbouring misconceptions. Is it right that a man who conducted himself with supreme dignity throughout his long and remarkable career should have details of his bodily functions made public on a daily basis? Is this the way to honour a person who took the uncommon step of voluntarily stepping down as chief minister of Bengal on grounds of health nearly a decade ago, after an unprecedented 23 years in the position? Recent press reports on Basu’s physical condition have referred to a plethora of health issues. Even coma was reportedly seen as a possibility. Yet the option of dialysis was just being “kept on hold”. And invasive tests were still being conducted despite concern about the impact of “needle-pushing” on the veteran politician’s
