Dr Ganpathy KV is now a member of the ICMR’s ethics committee
We are delighted to share that Dr Ganpathy K V (PhD; Clinical Psychologist, volunteer counsellor Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, National faculty, IAPC) is now a member of the ethics committee of the much coveted Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The ICMR is the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research.
Dr Ganpathy’s inclusion into the committee since March 2024, will allow him to represent the interest of the patients including the palliative care community, while also educating our colleagues about the importance of clinical trials and help in essence to bring new care practices into the field.
While we spoke to Dr Ganpathy he shared, “I am humbled to be part of the ICMR’s ethics committee. This new role will help me to regulate the consenting process in clinical trials across the country”.

Dr Avinash Tiwari receives the ‘Rabindra Smriti Samman’ felicitation on 5th May, 2024
We are happy to share that Dr Avinash Tiwari (Consultant, Pain and Palliative Medicine, Sanjeevani CBCC Cancer Hospital, Raipur, Chhattisgarh) has been felicitated with this year’s ‘Rabindra Smriti Samman’ on Sunday, 5th May, 2024, during an event held by the Geet Vitan Kala Kendra and Bhilai Steel Plant Officers Association. The event was held at the Mahatma Gandhi Kala Mandir, Civic Center, Bhilai, Chhattisgarh.
Dr Tiwari was felicitated on the occasion of Gurudev Rabindranth Tagore Jayanti 2024. The felicitation was presented in recognition of Dr Tiwari’s exceptional contributions in providing compassionate palliative care and in acknowledgement of his contributions towards alleviating humanitarian suffering.
On the occasion, Dr Tiwari was welcomed on stage by his former patient, a passionate music lover and singer, who was earlier unable to walk (due to her pain) and was also suffering (due to her inability to pursue music due to the disease and the treatment). Post care, she is now mobile and has continued her musical journey and holds distinguished achievements to her credits in the field of Classical Music.
When we reached out to Dr Tiwari, he shares, “I am humbled by this recognition. My biggest motivator which helps me to work harder is to see the smile and the calm on my patient’s face after they have received care from my team. I assure you that I will further work towards alleviating the pain and suffering of my patients and their caregivers.”

Bangalore Hospice Trust – Karunashraya, celebrated 25 years of service on 1st May, 2024
It is heartwarming to share that the Bangalore Hospice Trust (BHT) – Karunashraya, commemorated 25 years of service at the hospice on Wednesday, 1st May, 2024.
The ‘Memorial Day’ observes and celebrates the day the hospice began provisioning in-patient palliative care services, by honouring and remembering the patients and the caregivers cared for and are still continuing to be cared for at the hospice.
The event began with a ceremonial lighting of the lamp, following which Dr Nagesh Simha (Medical Director, BHT Karunashraya) welcomed the gathering. This was followed by Mr Kishore Rao (Chairman, BHT Karunashraya) and Mr Gurmeet Randhawa (Managing Trustee, BHT Karunashraya) addressing the gathering and sharing updates from the hospice. A few caregivers who were cared for by the hospice then went on to share their experiences. The evening then lightened up with a brilliant stand-up comedy show and an electrifying cultural program which was presented by the staff at the hospice. The event concluded with Mr Mathew Chandy (CEO, BHT Karunashraya) presenting the vote of thanks.
On this momentous occasion, Mr Randhawa shares “I wish to place on record my gratitude to the staff at all levels over the years who have maintained high standards and to all the family members of our patients who entrusted the care of their loved ones to us in their most difficult time. We, the Trustees, are truly humbled and proud of what we have collectively achieved in the 25 years”.

IGMCRI, Puducherry, in collaboration with IPM and Sanjeevan, launches a palliative care clinic from 3rd May, 2024
It is exciting to share that the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI), Puducherry, in collaboration with the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM), Kozhikode, and Sanjeevan Palliative Care (SPC), Puducherry, has launched a palliative care clinic on Friday, 3rd May, 2024, to cater to the growing demand for such services in the region.
The newly launched clinic will be led by Dr Remadevi R (Associate Professor, Anaesthesia, IGMCRI) and Dr Prakash M (Associate Professor, Community Medicine, IGMCRI). The team comprises of physicians from various specialities to provide a multimodal approach in palliative care. The clinic will provide Out-Patient services (OPD) to both cancer and non-cancer patients, twice a week, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. every Tuesday and Friday. While the clinic on Tuesday’s will primarily help with pain management, the clinic on Friday’s will focus on other aspects of palliative care. All services at the clinic will be provided at no cost to the patients.
The clinic was launched by Dr G Sriramulu (Director, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Puducherry) in the presence of Dr Ramachandra V Bhat (Dean, IGMCRI), Dr C Udayashanakar (Director, IGMCRI), Dr Joseph Rajesh (Medical Superintendent, IGMCRI), Dr Suresh Kumar (Director, IPM and SPC), Dr Kavita Vasudevan P (Head, Community Medicine, IGMCRI), Dr Pratheeba (Head, Anaesthesia, IGMCRI), Dr Surendran V (Assistant Professor, Community Medicine, IGMCRI) and Dr Mohan Raja S (Medical Officer and Coordinator, Sanjeevan Palliative Care, Puducherry).
A spokesperson from the team shares, “The primary goal of this clinic is to improve the quality of life of terminally ill patients by providing pain relief and other forms of support.”
