The Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC) is pleased to introduce its first onsite Fellowship in Home and Hospice Palliative Care (IAPC-FHHPC).

This fellowship has been developed to strengthen the knowledge, clinical skills, and leadership of healthcare professionals providing home-based and hospice palliative care across India. The programme aims to create a network of competent, compassionate, and community-focused palliative care practitioners while supporting centres committed to excellence in education and patient care.

  • Strengthen home-based and hospice palliative care services across India.
  • Develop skilled palliative care professionals through structured clinical training.
  • Promote high standards in education, patient care, and mentorship.
  • Encourage multidisciplinary, patient-centred, and community-oriented practice.
  • Build a sustainable network of accredited fellowship training centres.

The IAPC invites eligible institutions providing home and hospice palliative care services to apply for accreditation as recognised training centres for the IAPC Fellowship in Home and Hospice Palliative Care.

Accredited centres will have the opportunity to train fellows according to the curriculum and standards prescribed by the IAPC.

Eligibility Criteria for Training Centres

Centres seeking accreditation should fulfil the following requirements:

Clinical Services

  • Minimum of 300 new palliative care patients annually, including home care and hospice/inpatient services.
  • The center should demonstrate exposure to all types of palliative care cases across all age groups.

Faculty

The centre should have:

  • A full-time palliative care physician with an MD, DNB, or Diploma (recognised by the National Medical Commission) who will serve as the fellowship mentor.
  • Faculty with appropriate qualifications, experience, and recognised palliative care training.
  • An undertaking should be submitted along with the application ensuring continuity of faculty throughout the fellowship.

Academic Environment

The centre should provide:

  • A well-equipped library with relevant textbooks and journals.
  • Access to online learning resources (desirable).
  • Regular academic activities, including:
    • Case discussions
    • Journal clubs
    • Seminars
    • Mortality and morbidity meetings

Accreditation Process

Eligible centres must submit:

  • Prescribed application form
  • Required undertakings

Following submission, the IAPC will arrange an inspection of the centre by expert assessors.

Accreditation

  • Initial accreditation: 2 years
  • Subsequent re-accreditation: 5 years

Re-inspection of accredited centres every five years.

Accreditation Fees

  • Accreditation Fee: ₹25,000 (To be paid along with the application for accreditation)
  • Re-accreditation Fee: ₹25,000

Travel and local hospitality expenses for the IAPC assessors will be borne by the applicant institution.

Collaborative Training Centres

Where appropriate, two institutions may jointly apply for accreditation by combining complementary strengths—for example, one centre with strong home care services and another with established hospice facilities.

Such applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility of Faculty

Faculty members should:

  • Hold an MD, DNB, or Diploma recognised by the National Medical Commission.
  • Have at least five years of post-qualification experience in palliative care.
  • Should be a Life Members of the IAPC.
  • Have completed recognised palliative care training.
  • Be actively involved in clinical care.
  • Demonstrate experience in teaching and mentoring.

Exceptional faculty with extensive documented experience in palliative care may also be considered by the IAPC.

Eligibility of Fellows

Applicants should:

  • Hold an MBBS degree.
  • Possess valid registration with a State Medical Council.
  • Be selected according to the policies of the accredited training centre.

Become a Life Member of the IAPC before or during the fellowship, as applicable.

Duration of the Fellowship

The fellowship will ideally commence in February each year.

Assessment

The fellowship concludes with an IAPC Exit Examination conducted at the end of the training period.

Successful candidates will receive the IAPC Fellowship in Home and Hospice Palliative Care certificate at the Convocation ceremony at the IAPC Annual International Conference.

Become part of a national network committed to excellence in palliative care education

Fellow Capacity

  • Maximum of one fellow for every 100 palliative care cases.
  • A maximum of four fellows per centre per year, subject to case volume.
  • Faculty-to-fellow ratio of 1:2.

  • Applications for accreditation will be accepted through the prescribed application form available from IAPC Secretariat.

Important Dates

  • Application form to submit expression of interest for accreditation of centres is available from IAPC secretariat: 18th to 22nd June 2026 (please email to secretaryiapc2026@gmail.com to receive the form)
  • Last date to submit filled in application to IAPC: 30th June 2026, by 5.30 p.m.
  • Scrutiny of applications submitted by the centres: 1st to 11th July 2026
  • Accredited centres will be informed by 11th July 2026
  • Tentative Date for Opening of Fellowship Applications: 11th July 2026
  • Tentative Date for Commencement of the First Fellowship Batch: 1st August 2026 (Following the first transitional batch from 1st August 2026 to 31st July 2027, all subsequent batches will follow the standard academic calendar, from 1st February to 31st January.)
