The Subharti Medical College, Meerut, inaugurates a Palliative Care Ward on 15th July, 2024
It is with excitement we share that the Subharti Medical College, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, inaugurated a 30 bed Palliative Care Ward on Monday, 15th July, 2024.
The newly inaugurated ward will cater to the palliative care needs of adult patients of both cancer and non-cancer. Previously, palliative care services at the hospital were being provided via referrals from other departments on consultation basis. The new development will now provide In-patient services as well for patients in need of such services.
The ward will be managed by a team of 1 doctor and 2 nurses who are trained in palliative care, along with a team from the naturopathy department.
A thrilled team from Subharti Medical College shares, “We are very grateful to the management of our hospital towards this initiative. We are also indebted to Prof (Dr) Anurag Srivastava and the entire Oncology team for their constant support and encouragement. We are enthusiastic to begin these services and look forward to alleviating the suffering of those in need of such services.”

The ‘RMD Pain and Palliative Care Trust’ completed 20 years of service on 17th July, 2024
We are delighted to share that the ‘RMD Pain and Palliative Care Trust’ completed 20 years of service on Wednesday, 17th July, 2024.
The milestone was celebrated with the team organising an event ‘Games and Giggles with Seniors’ at their Karunasagar Hospice Center. The lively and fun filled event brought together young children and staff from the hospice to engage with the residents of the hospice via riveting games and various active interactions. The event not only brought smiles to all present there but also helped them bond and beat stress from everyday life.
Additionally, on Tuesday, 18th July, 2024, the team also launched a pilot project to offer a 6 months Certificate Course in Palliative Care to 2nd year Postgraduate Dental students of Saveetha University (Deemed), Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The institution is also working towards partnering with the Government of Tamil Nadu through the Chief Minister’s ‘Naan Mudalvan Scheme’ by providing short-term courses for students from rural settings who are socio-economically challenged, and who have either passed or dropped out of their 10th / 12th standards. The course will empower them as either General Duty Assistants, Emergency Health Assistants, Geriatric Care Technicians, or Medical Lab Technicians.
On surpassing this milestone, Dr Republica Sridhar (Director, RMD Group of Hospitals, Chennai) shares, “I am grateful to Prof. M R Rajagopal and team for their support towards all of our endeavours as we navigate several challenges towards the integration of Palliative Care as a medical speciality. Our Hospice and integrated medical care in RMD centres has been sustainable and a replicable model. We are proud to be associated with the National Health Mission as well as Government and Non-Government Medical Colleges to train and educate students in the basics of palliative care from various medical and paramedical colleges. During our twenty year journey, we have had the opportunity to have touched over one lakh patients and created job opportunities to improve the quality and dignity of life to individuals from various sections of the society”.

Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva, offers free community laboratory facility for their palliative home care patients from 25th July, 2024
It is with cheer we share that the Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva, Kerala, began offering free community laboratory facility for their socio economically challenged and bedridden home care patients registered in their Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine, from Thursday, 25th July, 2024.
The palliative physicians on the team prescribe only absolutely necessary and basic blood investigations. Thereafter the palliative social worker screens patients and approves those whp are eligible to avail these services due their inability to afford even these basic laboratory investigations.
The palliative care team provides free home care services to patients residing within a 15 kms radius of the hospital. The services provided by the palliative care team includes daily doctor led home care visits, nurse led home care visits, social workers domiciliary care led visits, physiotherapy lead visits; weekly visits but the community dermatologist, community nutrition therapist; and a bi-monthly visit by a community occupational therapist.
When we reached out to Dr Biju Raghavan (Senior Consultant and Head, Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine, Rajagiri Hospital) he shares, “This initiative is possible only due to the support from the hospital’s management and for their unwavering trust in our suggestions and decisions. My special gratitude to Fr. Johnson, Fr. Jose Paul, Dr. Sunitha and her team for making this project a reality.”

The ‘Lakshmi Sundaravadanan Hospital’ completed 10 years of hospital based palliative care service provisioning on 24th June, 2024
We are pleased to share that the ‘Lakshmi Sundaravadanan Hospital’, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, commemorated their 10 years of hospital based palliative care service provisioning on Monday, 24th June, 2024.
The team celebrated the milestone by inviting Staff from all cadres of the hospital, to an evening of fun and entertainment, along with their families. Several donors, well-wishers and patrons of the hospital were also invited to join the celebrations. Those employees who were with the hospital since its inception were also honoured during the celebrations. After enjoying a sumptuous dinner which was interspersed with games and dance performances, the staff were presented with a gift box in appreciation of their support and contributions towards patient care. Celebrations continued on Friday, 19th July, 2024, with close friends and colleagues of long standing being invited for an informal dinner get together at the Madras Cricket Club, Chennai.
The hospital provides integrated and holistic palliative care across departments to patients in need of such services, as the entire team is sensitised in the basics of palliative care. The hospital also provides specialised and exclusive palliative care services through their Trust, the Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust via their Out Patient, In Patient and Home Care services for patients from across the city. The Trust has been functioning from the hospital which was previously known as ‘Sundaravadanan Nursing Home’, since it’s inception in 2000.
On this occasion, Dr Mallika Tiruvadanan (Founder Trustee, Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust, Chennai) shares, “Providing Palliative Care is not just for gratification or satisfaction; it is the fundamental duty of every doctor and nurse towards all patients. Let us hope that all future doctors and nurses are well equipped with the knowledge, skills and compassionate ways of this aspect of medical care to give their best towards a healthier society”.

JASCAP and Department and Palliative Medicine, TMC Mumbai, collaborated on 24th June, 2024, to develop capacity for bereaved families
It is heartwarming to share that JASCAP, an NGO based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, collaborated with the Department of Palliative Medicine (PM), Tata Memorial Center (TMC) Mumbai, Maharashtra, on Monday, 24th June, 2024, to develop capacity for 12 bereaved families at TMC Mumbai.
The collaboration this time (which happens time-to-time for patient centered initiatives) aimed to help children from bereaved families resume their education.
On Monday, 24th June, 2024, 12 very bright and enthusiastic children were felicitated at a small event organised at the Department of Palliative Medicine, Tata Memorial Center (TMC), Mumbai, to encourage and recognise each of their outstanding academic performance. Each child was also offered financial support to ensure that their education continued without any hindrance.
On the occasion Dr (PhD) Ganpathy K V (CEO, JASCAP) shares, “Initiatives such as these are testimonials on how JASCAP and TMC Mumbai aim to ensure that holistic palliative care is provided for patients even after they have passed on. These initiatives help reiterate that palliative care considers the entire family to be the unit of care. We, at JASCAP, are deeply indebted to Dr Jayita Deodhar and the others at the Department of Palliative Medicine, TMC, Mumbai, for providing us with this humbling opportunity.”
