“Even though I’m leaving, a piece of me will stay” – T, age 15
– Dr. Mayank Gupta, Bathinda
In the face of a terminal cancer diagnosis, 15-year-old T* discovered a powerful outlet in art. What began as a personal form of expression soon evolved into something greater: a lasting legacy that brought her purpose, peace, and connection in her final months.
T poured her emotions, dreams, and fears into her artwork—creating a vibrant collection of paintings that unfolded her story without words. Her palliative care team gently encouraged and supported her throughout. As her condition progressed, the idea of an art exhibition began to take shape, , offering her something beautiful and meaningful to look forward to.
Held in the hospital where she was receiving care, the exhibition was a quiet celebration of T’s spirit. Family, friends, teachers, staff, and community members gathered—each moved by the raw honesty and beauty of her work. For T, it was a moment of validation, joy, and deep fulfilment. Each painting whispered a story of dreams, strength, vulnerability and light shining through adversity.
More than just a display, the exhibition became a powerful portrayal of her legacy. Her artwork continues to speak where words fall short, reminding us of the profound ways creativity can bring light, dignity, and meaning—especially at the end of life.
“Still Here”
by a girl who paints with light and hope
I don’t have forever — but I have now,
And now is full of colors.
Some days are soft like skies before rain,
Others are storms — but even storms pass.
I paint what I feel,
What I see when I close my eyes:
Not just hospitals and needles,
But sunlit trees, faces I love,
Dreams that still bloom despite everything.
If you’re holding this,
You’re holding a part of me —
Not the sick me,
But the me that still laughs,
Still hopes,
Still believes in beauty.
So here it is. My gift.
A brushstroke of my soul.
Still here. Still painting. Still loving.
Thank you for looking.
This poem is dedicated to T, with heartfelt regards from the Palliative Care Team, AIIMS Bathinda.
