The Indian Nursing Council now includes a 20 hour mandatory module on Palliative Care for the UG Nursing Curriculum
We are happy to report that the latest course outline for the Under Graduate (UG) Nursing curriculum, published by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) now includes a 20 hour mandatory nursing module on palliative care.
According to the latest syllabus, this 20 hour module is included in the 4th semester of the BSc Nursing curriculum.
The INC shares that the module is designed to help nursing students to develop in-depth knowledge, competencies, and a positive approach in providing quality palliative care to those suffering from chronic illnesses and resultant health problems in a variety of settings, collaborating supportive services.

IAPC’s CCEPC Update: Last date for applications extended to 4th July, 2022
The IAPC has extended the last date to submit applications for the IAPC’s much sought after course, the 5th online batch of the IAPC’s ‘Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care (CCEPC)’ to Monday, 4th July, 2022.
The IAPC’s CCEPC is a basic course in palliative care for doctors and nurses, which aims to inculcate the principles of palliative care in every day practice for doctors and nurses to improve patient care through proper communication and effective management of difficult symptoms. The course will be delivered in 2 components: Part A and Part B.
This year, a few select sessions in the Part A component of the course will be held separately (in parallel) for Doctors and Nurses.
These classes will be held over 3 weekends as Online half-day weekend theory (Saturday: 1 p.m. onwards; Sunday: 8 a.m. onwards) classes on 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 23rd and 24th July, 2022.
The course fee of Rs.2,500/- for Doctors and Rs.1,200/- for Nurses will include the training fee, the course materials and the examination fee.

Register before 31st July, 2022, to enrol for the NFPM and NFPN, offered jointly by IPM and the CMAI
Applications are now invited for the National Fellowship in Palliative Medicine (NFPM) and the National Fellowship in Palliative Nursing (NFPN), offered jointly by the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM), a WHO collaborating center, and the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI).
The National Fellowship in Palliative Medicine (NFPM) and the National Fellowship in Palliative Nursing (NFPN) aims to train doctors and nurses with the necessary knowledge and professional skills to render quality palliative care services, in addition to providing them with new insights and perspectives to positively influence their outlook towards the practice of Medicine / Nursing i.e. from being a medicine centric professional to a person centric professional who is an equal partner in a team.
Applicants with an MBBS / BDS degree, recognized by the Medical Council of India / Dental Council of India and who have completed a 1-year internship are eligible to apply for the NFPM.
Applicants with a General Nursing Midwifery (GNM) Diploma or BSc Nursing degree recognized by the Indian Nursing Council are eligible to apply for the NFPN.

Register for the Health Assistant Training Program, offered by Karunashraya
The Bangalore Hospice Trust – Karunashraya has announced that admissions are open for the 2022 batch of their Health Assistant Training Program.
The 6 month free program aims to train young women with the necessary skills and the basic techniques that are needed to provide quality patient care, while also empowering them to become independent individuals.
Girls between the age of 18-25 with a minimum of 10th standard qualification will be eligible to apply for this program. These young adult women will also be provided a stipend during this free 6 month training period.

The DSCOG Meeting advocates for the seamless amalgamation of palliative medicine into oncology
The Delhi Supportive Care Oncology Group (DSCOG) had organized a grand meeting on Friday, 27th May, 2022, to advocate for the integration of Palliative Medicine in oncology. The meeting was aptly themed ‘Integrating Palliative Medicine improves quality of life’.
The evening began with a role play ‘Nukkad Naatak‘ on how the integration of palliative medicine improves the quality of life of patients. This was followed by two panel discussions with eminent faculty members.
The first panel discussion was titled ‘Oncologists se Vichaar-Vimarsh‘, while the second panel discussion was titled ‘Can a palliative medicine physician help you? Palliative Managemnt of difficult situations: a panel discussion with Oncologists and Palliative Medicine physicians‘.
The evening concluded with a lecture on ‘Malignant spinal cord compression – multi disciplinary management’ for post graduates in oncology, and was appreciated by all oncologists including radiation oncologists and ortho-oncologists.

Workshop on ‘Handling Difficult Communication in an advanced illness setting’ was conducted successfully by KMC, Manipal on 14th June, 2022
The Department of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, conducted a three hour interactive workshop on ‘Handling Difficult Communication in an advanced illness setting’ on Tuesday, 14th June, 2022.
Over 130 participants which included Doctors, Nurses, Health Care allied Professionals, Students pursuing MBBS and Nursing attended the workshop which was organised as a part of the summer school programme of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
Physicians from various streams of medicine such as Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, General Medicine, Surgery and other specialities such as Nephrology, Neurology etc. participated in the workshop.
The workshop kept participants riveted to discussions around the efficient management of challenging communication and it’s associated situations, as participants were eager to understand the nuances of difficult communication and techniques to manoeuvre the same.
Dr Sharath Kumar Rao, Dean, Kasturba Medical College, MAHE, Manipal, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, was the Guest of Honour for the workshop.
A Virtual Research Library focussing on LMICs launched

The ‘Virtual Research Library’ is an electronic collection of open access research-related resources and tools that aim to support clinical research in low-and-middle income countries (LMIC). This library is a collaborative project between the Nepalese Association of Palliative Care (NAPCare) and the University of Virginia School of Nursing and Center for Global Health to build research capacity in Nepal (and similar countries). A particular focus of the Virtual Library is mobile health (mHealth) and non-communicable disease (NCD) research, as these are important priorities in many LMICs. Within the Virtual Library, one can access resources that are relevant for individuals; their organization/institution; and also on a national/government level.
Update from IAPC ACADEMY
Report on activities in June
Series 4 of the IAPC Academy’s online lecture series continued as a total of 4 lectures were presented in June. A total of 26 Lectures on ‘Palliative Care Drugs’ will be delivered primarily by Junior Residents of Palliative Medicine and moderated by a Faculty, in this Series.
These lectures will be delivered every monday morning between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. with an aim to satiate the palliative care fraternity’s thirst for knowledge.
The first lecture in June was a riveting presentation on ‘Anti-depressants in Palliative Care’ delivered by Dr Raghavendra Ramanjulu and moderated by Dr Sushma Bhatnagar. The following session was a comprehensive lecture on ‘Cardiovascular Drugs in Palliative Care’ delivered by Dr Kashish Vats and ably moderated by Dr Raghu S Thota. The third session for the month, an interesting lecture on ‘Cannabinoids in Palliative Care’ was presented by Dr Bhawesh Pangaria and moderated by Dr Karthik A R. The series in June concluded with a fantastic presentation on ‘Endocrine drugs in Palliative Care’ delivered by Dr M Susan Shekinah and moderated by Dr Jenifer Jeba S.
We thank our speakers and the moderators for sharing their time and expertise to enrich the knowledge of the palliative care’s community.
