Over 400 Doctors and Nurses trained in the basics of palliative care as part of the IAPC’s CCEPC
The IAPC has successfully completed the theory classes of the 5th online batch of the IAPC’s ‘Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care (CCEPC)’ on Sunday, 24th July, 2022.
We are happy to report that over 300 doctors and 80 nurses from across the country participated in this batch of the IAPC’s CCEPC program.
For this batch, half-day online classes were held over 3 weekends on 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 23rd and 24th July, 2022, with select clinical sessions held separately for doctors and nurses.
The online mock examination for this batch will be held on Saturday, 10th September, 2022, between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and the final examination is scheduled for Saturday, 1st October, 2022, between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
The IAPC extends its gratitude to all the course center coordinators for their exceptional support towards the successful conduct of the course. The IAPC is also grateful to the faculty for sharing their time and expertise to deliver the lectures during the program.

The NBEMS invites India’s Palliative Care Faculty to present lectures for students pursuing DNB in PM
We are happy to report that the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) had reached out to Dr Sushma Bhatnagar in May, to help invite Faculty from India’s Palliative Care community to deliver lectures for students pursuing DNB in Palliative Medicine. This activity was then planned in consultation with the Academy of Palliative Medicine, a recently instituted body of the IAPC.
Over 60 lectures are scheduled to be delivered in the first phase, with the first lecture being delivered on Monday, 4th July, 2022. These lectures will be delivered virtually, on a weekly basis and will be primarily attended by students of DNB in PM. Students of MD in PM were also given special permission to attend these lectures, based on Dr Bhatnagar’s request to the NBEMS.
The student community will definitely benefit from this initiative as this initiative will create an opportunity for them to learn from the country’s best faculty on a wide array of topics.

The Department of Palliative Medicine, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, is inviting Doctors and Nurses (BSc and GNM) with State Registrations, to register for an online course on the ‘Basics in paediatric palliative care’.
The course aims at training Doctors and Nurses in managing children and their families, who are struggling to live in the face of progressive, symptomatic, and debilitating diseases.
The online course will be delivered every Saturday, between 2:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. and is scheduled to commence on Saturday, 6th August, 2022, with the last session slated for Saturday, 10th September, 2022.

DNipCare organises Cancer Awareness and Palliative Care Sensitization programs across Delhi in July
The Delhites’ National Initiative in Palliative Care (DNipCare), had organised a series of Cancer Awareness and Palliative Care Sensitization programs across Delhi in July, 2022, to take forward their mission to develop sustainable and cost effective systems of Palliative Care delivery with active community participation.
On Sunday, 3rd July, 2022, they organised one such session in association with the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Syrian Church, Karol Bagh, New Delhi. Rev. Fr. C.K. Koshy inaugurated the program and Mr. P.B. Saji, Secretary, DNipCare, welcomed the audience. The DNipCare Team led by Dr. Ayesha Nawaz Begum (Resident Doctor, Safdarjung Hospital), Dr. Aparna CK (Volunteer, DNipCare), Mr. Cyriac Antony (DDG, Niti Aayog & Treasurer DNipCare), Mr. Desanth Chakkampath (Nursing Officer, Safdarjung Hospital), and Ms. Shyni Chacko (Senior Nursing Officer ESI Hospital) sensitised the audience on the preventive and treatment aspects of cancer along with palliative care. The session was coordinated by Mr. Suresh Thaliyaril, Secretary, DNipCare.
NCC Cadets of 3rd Battalion NCC at B-6, NCC Building, Safdarjung Enclave were sensitised next with separate sessions being organised for male and female cadets. On Thursday, 14th July, 2022, 425 male NCC cadets were sensitized about cancer and palliative care. Col. Dharamvir of 3rd Battalion NCC, presided over this program. On Wednesday, 20th July, 2022, 356 female NCC cadets were sensitised with a special focus on breast cancer and palliative care. Col. Harminder Singh presided over the program. Both these sessions were led by Prof. Anita Khokhar (Director – Professor, Community Medicine, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi), and supported by Mr KV Hamza (General Secretary, DNipCare), Mr. Suresh Thaliyaril (Secretary, DNipCare) and Ms. Seema Prasad (Student Volunteers Coordinator, DNipCare).
Sparsh Hospice successfully conducts a community awareness program on palliative care in Telangana on 5th July, 2022
Over 200 people from two villages (Pandilla and Potlapalli), in Husnabad Mandal Sidhipet district of Telangana were sensitised about palliative care on Tuesday, 5th July, 2022. The sensitization session was conducted successfully by the Doctors, interns and volunteers of Sparsh Hospice, Hyderabad.
Sparsh Hospice is a project of the Rotary Club of Banjara Hills Charitable Trust.
The 4 hour sensitisation program was a grand success as it had the support of local panchayat presidents and politicians, who ensured that the program was attended widely by villagers. The session ended with the community requesting Team Sparsh to organise a medical camp. The team has obliged and will be conducting the medical camp shortly.
As a result of these community engagement activities, several cancer patients and patients with serious health related issues were identified from both villages. This community engagement program was also covered by the local press. Please click here to read the coverage.
The KSSSCI, Lucknow, and KGMU, Lucknow, jointly organise a ‘Training program for Nurses in Cancer Pain’, on 23rd July, 2022
The Department of Palliative Care, Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI), in affiliation with the Pain Unit, Department of Anesthesiology, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) organised and inaugurated their Training program for Nurses in Cancer Pain on Saturday, 23rd July, 2022. This training program is being organised under the aegis of the IAPC.
The in-person training and workshops will be conducted for 3 hours, every Saturday, for 4 weeks at KGMU, Lucknow, starting from 23rd July, 2022, to 13th August, 2022. The sessions will cover a wide array of topics beginning from the Introduction to palliative care to gradually include advanced topics such as wound care, ostomies care, cancer pain management and end of life care.
A total of 60 nurses in 2 batches participated in the inauguration session of this workshop series. Dr Sarita Singh, Interventional Pain and Palliative Care Physician, KGMU, is the course coordinator for this series of training and workshops.
Max Institute of Cancer Centre conducts a CME on ‘End of Life Care’ on 2nd June, 2022
The Pain and Palliative Care Division, Max Institute of Cancer Centre, in association with the Medical Administration & Quality team at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, successfully conducted a CME on ‘End of Life Care’ on Thursday, 2nd June, 2022.
The session was chaired by Dr Omender Singh, Principal Director, Critical Care, and Dr Sandeep Jain, Associate Director, Accident & Emergency.
The hybrid (In-person and virtual) CME was attended by over 50 doctors. Dr Megha Pruthi, Senior Consultant, Palliative Medicine, welcomed the esteemed speakers, Dr Sushma Bhatnagar (President, Indian Association of Palliative Care; Chief, Dr B.R.A IRCH, AIIMS, New Delhi and Head, NCI, Jhajjar), Dr Naveen Salins (Professor & Head, Dept. of Palliative Medicine & Supportive Care, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal) and Dr Gaurav Chanana (Senior Consultant, Pain & Palliative Medicine, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket).
Dr Bhatnagar introduced the concept of end of life care along with her rich and vast experiences in delivering care to patients at AIIMS, New Delhi. She also touched upon the policies practiced at AIIMS, New Delhi, and urged the audience to be more empathetic by creating systems in which patients’ feel supported during their end of life.
Dr Salins shared the Indian position with respect to end of life scenarios backed by evidence and available statistics. He also discussed the laws associated with end of life care in India while touching upon the ‘Blue Maple’ policy document from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.
Dr Chanana shared the policies and practices followed at Max Hospital for end of life care. He encouraged Doctors to recognize death and the medical futility of disease directed treatment and to be forthcoming to integrate palliative care for their end of life care patients.
The session concluded with interactive discussions in which queries were addressed and opinions were shared. The program was supported by Dr. Pranav Shankar, Medical Superintendent, Ms Ritu Nadeem, Sr. Manager, Medical Quality, Ms Shalini Sharma, Dy. Manager, Medical Quality, and Mr Manish Chaudhary, Dy Manager, Medical Quality and his team.
BHT – Karunashraya, conducts a ‘Training of Trainers’ workshop for Doctors and Nurses from Odisha, in May and June, 2022
The Karunashraya Institute for Palliative Care Education and Research (KIPCER), conducted a 10-day Foundation Course in palliative care for Medical Officers and Nursing Officers from Odisha, as per the order from the Directorate of Public Health, Odisha. The training sessions were organised between Wednesday, 4th May, 2022, and Wednesday, 22nd June, 2022, and in 3 batches with each batch consisting of 11 Doctors and 11 Nurses.
The training program was offered both virtually and in-person, and was delivered by expert palliative care faculty from across the country.
The KIPCER team ensured that the training encompassed the practical aspects of palliative care service and delivery in both institutional and home-based settings, and also contextualized to individual settings, be it primary, secondary, or tertiary.

Report on activities in July
Four lectures were delivered in July as part of Series 4 of the IAPC Academy’s online lecture series. A total of 26 Lectures on ‘Palliative Care Drugs’ will be delivered primarily by Junior Residents of Palliative Medicine and moderated by a Faculty, in this Series.
These lectures will be delivered every Monday morning between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. with an aim to satiate the palliative care fraternity’s thirst for knowledge.
The series in July began with a comprehensive presentation on ‘Drugs used in Palliative Sedation’, presented by Dr Adumala Aruna and moderated by Dr Gayatri Palat. The second lecture in July was an in-depth presentation on ‘Opioid Pharmacogenomics’ delivered by Dr Rabiya Razak and moderated by Dr Raghav Gupta. The following session was an interesting lecture on ‘Topical agents in palliative care practice’ delivered by Dr Kesavarajand moderated by Dr Gaurav Sharma. The last session for July was a fantastic presentation on ‘Drug interactions in Palliative Care Practice’ delivered by Dr Gayatri S and moderated by Dr Krithika Rao.

The IAPC Academy’s Online Lecture Series 4 will be successfully completed with the presentation of 2 lectures in August.
With this, a total of 104 lectures have been delivered collectively from Series 1, 2, 3 and 4.

IAPC Academy’s Online Lecture Series 5 announced!
We are very excited to announce the IAPC Academy’s Online Lecture Series 5. Series 5 will focus on ‘Training in Palliative Care Research’ and will be delivered by expert palliative care faculty.
Post a one week break after the successful completion of Series 4, Series 5 will commence from Monday, 22nd August, 2022. Series 5 will deliver a total of 9 Lectures, every Monday morning between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Series 5 is slated to conclude on Monday, 17th October, 2022.
