Dr Krithika S Rao is awarded the ‘ASCO IDEA Award 2023’
We are very delighted to share that Dr Krithika S Rao (Assistant Professor, Department of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal) is one of the recipients of this year’s American Society of Clinical Oncology – International Development and Education (ASCO IDEA) Award.
Dr Krithika S Rao was presented with this award at the Conquer Cancer Grants Awards Ceremony held on Friday, 2nd June, 2023, as part of the ASCO’s 2023 Annual Meeting, at Chicago, Illinois, United States of America.
The award recognises Dr Rao’s professional achievements and her potential to be a leader of oncology in India. The award also acknowledges her commitment to cancer research that will make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
An excited Dr Rao shares, “Receiving the ASCO IDEA 2023 award was such an overwhelming experience. I had an opportunity to interact with and learn from the leaders of oncology around the world. I also had the privilege and honour to meet and have discussions with Dr Lynn M (President, ASCO) regarding the importance of including Palliative Medicine topics in oncology conferences.”

NMC recognises St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, and Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Jaipur, to offer DNB in Palliative Medicine
We are thrilled to announce that the St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka, and the Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Jaipur, Rajasthan, have been recently approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to begin offering DNB in Palliative Medicine from this academic year.
2 Seats have been allocated to each of the newly recognised centers to offer DNB in Palliative Medicine from this year. The institute will be allowed to intake students from this very academic year, as the NEET counselling for the year is yet to take place.
The Department of Palliative Medicine at St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka, is managed by Dr Nandini Vallath (Professor and Head, Department of Palliative Medicine). On this occasion she shared her mixed feelings; the joy on the opportunity to develop a centre of academic excellence, along with the concerns and uncertainties regarding how the processes may unfold.
The Department of Anaesthesia and Palliative Care Medicine at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Jaipur, Rajasthan, is managed by Dr Anjum Khan Joad (Director, Department of Anaesthesia and Palliative Care Medicine) who shares, “We have been working towards offering DNB in Palliative Medicine for a while now. While we are happy to have received this recognition and contribute towards increasing the pool of palliative medicine specialists in our country, we are also aware of the responsibility it brings along with it. This recognition will motivate us to further strengthen our service provisioning to be more robust and evidence based”.

Pallium India welcomes New Chairman and Trustees
In June 2023, Pallium India announced that eminent individuals have joined Pallium India as Trustee’s and that Dr M R Rajagopal has been elevated as Chairman Emeritus.
Dr Soumya Swaminathan (Former Chief Scientist, World Health Organization) and Dr Vijayakumar K (Honorary Secretary, Health Action by People, Trivandrum) have joined Pallium India as the new Trustee’s.
We understand that the board and the management at Pallium India have been working on a succession plan for Dr Rajagopal, for over 3 years now. The board has now approved for Mr. Binod Hariharan to be the new Chairman going forward.
Dr M R Rajagopal, the new Chairman Emeritus will continue to be the Director of TIPS. He will be available as a mentor and guide to Pallium India.

Soul Palliative Care Center inaugurates their In-patient center at Chennai on 22nd June, 2023
We are happy to share that Soul Palliative Care Center, Chennai, has inaugurated their in-patient palliative care center at Madavakkam, Chennai, on Thursday, 22nd June, 2023.
The Government of Tamil Nadu has sponsored the construction of this new center. The center was inaugurated by the Chief Guests Mr Subramanian (Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu), and Mr Tha Mo Anbarasan (Minister for MSME and Tamil Nadu Urban Habitation Development Board, Government of Tamil Nadu), in the presence of other Guests of Honour Mr Thamizhachi Thangapandian (MP, Lok Sabha), Mr Ramesh Aravind (Member of Legislative Assembly, Tamil Nadu) and Mr A R Rahul Nadh IAS (District Collector, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu) and other several eminent dignitaries.
The newly inaugurated center will include 6 beds and a training center to house 25 people. This new center will provide free palliative care services to both cancer and non-cancer patients.
Soul Palliative Care Center currently provides free home care services in Chennai. A total of 588 patients have received free palliative care services from the center till date. This home care service will continue to be provided along with the newly available in-patient services.
A motivated Ms Preetha Mahesh (Founder, Soul Palliative Care Center) shares, “This has been a dream project of mine which will help me provide the much-needed solace and care to countless individuals requiring palliative support. I am humbled by the support I have received from like minded people during my journey thus far and also with the support of the government towards this very important endeavour. I assure you that my team and I will deliver the best that we are capable of.”
