Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, recognised as an ‘International Reference Center for Palliative and End of Life Care’

It is with immense pride, we share that Kasturba Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), Manipal, is the only institution in the country to be recognised as an ‘International Reference Center for Palliative and End of Life Care’. This recognition has been granted by the International Collaborative for Best Care for the Dying Person, a Europe based organisation situated at the University of Liverpool, UK.

The award recognises KMCH’s high quality clinical work and it’s development of national level polices, guidelines, and research in palliative and end of life care.

The initiation of the country’s first Critical Review Board (CCRB), the development of protocols for high-risk discharge against medical advice (DAMA) , the development of a COVID Care plan for the critically ill COVID patients, were a few of KMCH’s achievements that were highlighted at the occasion.

The Excellence in ELNEC award winners for 2021, are now announced

Two inspiring and distinguished End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) trainers have been bestowed with the Excellence in ELNEC award winners for 2021.

The winners of the this year’s awards are our very own:

  • Lieutenant Mrs. Alice Stella Verginia
  • Dr. Stanley C. Macaden

The award recognizes the outstanding work of nursing trainers to promote palliative care nursing and who have been a role model in teaching and advocating palliative care nursing.

The International Award for Excellence in Palliative Care (2021-2022), announced!

The ‘International Award for Excellence in Palliative Care (2021-2022)’ awarded by the Cancer Aid Society, Lucknow, was announced on Sunday, 13th February, 2022, during the valedictory ceremony of IAPCON 2022. 

The winners from the three categories as follows: 

  • Doctor Category: Dr Biji M S (Assistant Professor and In charge, Cancer Palliative Medicine, Malabar Cancer Centre, Thalassery, Kerala)
  • Nurses / Para Medical category: Ms Saroja Gangaiah (Senior Pharmacist, Department of Palliative Medicine, KMIO, Bangalore)
  • Volunteer category: Mr K Radhakrishna Menon (Palliative Care Volunteer from Kochi, Kerala)

Dr. Piyush Gupta, Vice President, Cancer Aid Society, USA and Secretary & PEO, Cancer Aid Society, mentioned that “all applications were evaluated thoroughly and the winners were selected by the Honourable Judges after due diligence”.


Dr. M. R. Rajagopal’s memoir, ‘Walk with the Weary’ launched on 22nd February 2022

Dr M R Rajagopal’s much awaited memoir, ‘Walk with the Weary’ was officially launched by Dr Shashi Tharoor, MP, in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, 22nd February 2022.

The 242 page book in english is a compilation of shared experiences from Dr Rajagopal’s decades long palliative care journey, and showcases the chronicles of a doctor, who became obsessed with relieving patient suffering even before pain management became a speciality (popularly known today as palliative care), along with his unwavering dedication to the cause.

He dedicates the memoir to all those who shared their life stories with the author.“This is an exceptionally readable book, written in a very lucid and free-flowing style,” said Dr. Tharoor, releasing the memoir. He added that “The dying must be allowed to leave this world with dignity, grace and peace”.

An excerpt from the book reads, “I believe I have a right to a compassionate and responsive medical system that will not reject the human being in me simply because my disease is incurable.”

Foundation stone laid for a 20 bed hospice, ‘Saanjvaat – Life with dignity’ at Kolhapur, Maharashtra

The much awaited foundation stone laying ceremony of a cancer hospice, Saanjwaat, was held on Friday, 4th February, 2022. The hospice is a project of the Chatrapati Shahu Cancer Research Foundation, who are also currently providing Palliative care services (OP Services) under another project, the Onco-Prime Kolhapur Cancer Center. 

The proposed 20 bedded hospice will provide advanced cancer patients a life with dignity and is estimated to be operational by the end 2023. Of the proposed 20 beds, 15 beds will be offered on charitable basis while the remaining 5 will be on chargeable basis.

Mr. Sanjay Singh Chavan, CEO, Zilla Parishad, Kolhapur, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and shared that “Every person has the right to be pain-free, happy and have a dignified death. I am happy that Onco-Prime Kolhapur Cancer Centre has begun working on this project, which will be unique to this part of India”.

Karunashraya inaugurates and dedicates a new block for Palliative Care Education and Research

The Bangalore Hospice Trust – Karunashraya, inaugurated its new block, ‘The Bagchi Education and Research Center and OPD Block’, on Sunday, 27th February, 2022. The building will facilitate many palliative care educational and research activities and also house the hospice’s OPD Unit.

Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director / Vice Chancellor, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and inaugurated the new block. Mrs Susmita Bagchi and Mr Subroto Bagchi, patrons of Karunashraya, were also present at the inauguration. 

A large number of well-wishers of Karunashraya participated in this historic event.
