Bangalore Hospice Trust (Karunashraya) wins the IAHPC’s ‘Institutional Recognition Award 2023’ under the LMIC category
It is with immense pleasure, we share that the Bangalore Hospice Trust (Karunashraya) has been awarded the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care’s (IAHPC) ‘Institutional Recognition Award 2023’ under the Low and Middle income category (LMIC).
The award has been presented to Bangalore Hospice Trust (Karunashraya) in recognition of the institution’s outstanding dedication to the development and provision of palliative care, leading to improvements in the quality of life of patients with serious health related suffering.
Bangalore Hospice Trust (Karunashraya) will now receive a certificate recognising them as the winner of this award and a cash prize of USD 1000 from IAHPC.
On this occasion, Dr Srinagesh Simha (Medical Director, Bangalore Hospice Trust, Karunashraya) shares, “Karunashraya is humbled by this recognition. It is the culmination of over 28 years of service by our team, rendered with diligence, dedication and devotion”.

JLN Medical College, Ajmer, begins a ‘Department of Palliative Medicine’ at their hospital on 5th February, 2023
A ‘Department of Palliative Medicine’ was inaugurated at the Jawahar Lal Nehru (JLN) Medical College, Ajmer, on Sunday, 5th February, 2023.
The team shares that palliative care services for the past two years were provisioned through the Department of Anesthesia, and that the new department dedicated to palliative care was sanctioned earlier this month.
The newly inaugurated department will provide services via their 40 bedded In-patient service, out-patient service and also provide referral services to other departments in the hospital. The Department of Palliative Medicine will cater to oncological, non-oncological and those patients with chronic pain.
The recently formed Department of Palliative Medicine will be led by Dr Neena Jain (Senior Professor, Department of Palliative Medicine), Dr Deepak Kumar Garg (Associate Professor, Department of Palliative Medicine) and Dr Vikas Gupta (Assistant Professor, Department of Palliative Medicine).

Golden Butterflies Children’s Palliative Care Foundation completed 5 years of service provision to child patients and their families on 8th February, 2023
We are delighted to share that Golden Butterflies Children’s Palliative Care Foundation completed 5 years of provisioning service to child patients and their families on Wednesday, 8th February, 2023.
To commemorate this milestone, the foundation hosted a Fundraiser on Friday, 3rd February, 2023, at Raja Annamalai Mandram in Chennai. Wholesome entertainment during an evening filled with laughter and music titled ‘Unfolding lil wings’ was the objective, whilst also honouring staff, volunteers, donors, and supporters of the foundation.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan (Principal, MOP, Vaishnav College for Women) as Chief Guest, Justice Baskaran, Mr S Santhanakrishnan (Patron, Golden Butterflies, and Managing Partner, PKF Sridhar & Santhanam), Mr P Mahendran (IPS, DCP), Dr S Pandian (IRS, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai), Mrs Shreelatha (Managing Partner, ABS Marine Pvt. Ltd.), and Mr Sathya (Founder, Sathya’s Geethanjali).
On the occasion, a handbook on Paediatric Supportive Care was released by the dignitaries, and awards were presented to volunteers (WINGS) and staff for their dedicated efforts.
Music was performed by Sathya’s Geethanjali and the voices of young superstar winners of Vijay TV fame – Miss Neha Girish and Master Krishaang R P, reverberated in the iconic hall with their soulful singing of old and new songs. Stand-up comedian, Mr Praveen Kumar, also entertained the audience with his family-based jokes and incidents.

The Department of Medicine, KMIO, Bengaluru, inaugurates ‘Neravina Kare: Call for care’, telemedicine services on 15th February, 2023
Happy to announce that the Department of Palliative Medicine at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO), Bengaluru, launched ‘Neravina Kare: Call for care’, a telemedicine service from Wednesday, 15th February, 2023.
The service was launched in the presence of the Chief Guest, Dr Saraswathi Devi, and the Guest of Honor, Dr Ramamani’s presence. Other dignitaries included Dr V B Gowda (Medical Superintendent, KMIO), Mrs Seema Naik (Chief Administrative Officer, KMIO), Dr Prabha Seshachar (Resident Medical Officer, KMIO) and Dr Arathi (Head, Department of Palliative Medicine). The ceremony was also attended by the Heads of various Departments, various faculty and Nurses from the hospital.
The ceremony began with the traditional lighting of the lamp. This was followed with the gathering being sensitised about the need for, the benefits and the importance of telemedicine services for those terminally ill patients who are bed bound, or cannot access palliative care services at a hospital due to geographical constraints.
These services are therefore aimed to support patients from outside Bengaluru or those who cannot physically visit the hospital owing to their health conditions.

A 5 bedded palliative care ward has been inaugurated at Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur, on 18th February, 2023
It is heart-warming to note that the need and importance of palliative care is growing across the country. In line with this, the Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, has inaugurated a 5 bedded palliative care ward on Saturday, 18th February, 2023.
This ward will be a part of the Comprehensive Cancer Clinic at the center. The Comprehensive Cancer Clinic will provide integrated services such as Chemotherapy, Palliative Care, Paediatric Oncology and Cancer Screening facilities all under one roof.
The new center was inaugurated by Dr B S Jha, the Superintendent of Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital. These services augment the palliative care service provisioning at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Center, Muzaffarpur.

Life Care Foundation celebrates their 4th year anniversary on 19th February, 2023
Life Care Foundation (LCF) celebrated the completion of 4 years of operation on Sunday, 19th February, 2023, with a gathering of palliative care patients and their families at an event organised at AELI Study Center, Kochi, Kerala.
Over 100 differently abled and bedridden patients of Keezhmadu panchayat, gathered together with their families to forget their pain and suffering, with dance and music. The day also provided self-employment training as part of the center’s rehabilitation program for their patients amidst fun and frolic. On this occasion, LCF also initiated their project ‘Need based Care’ which aims to identify the needs of each patient and try to fulfil them ably supported by the community around.
The event was also attended by popular regional film stars Niaz Baker, Rajini Chandy, Shivdas Marampally Rafiq Chokli and other prominent personalities. A musical feast was presented by Suresh, Salam and Fiza Ashraf from the choir, along with a mesmerising performance by violinist Arun.
The event was led by ASHA workers, dedicated LCF members and the staff of AELI Study Center. Everyone who participated at the event left with a heart full of joy, handful of gifts and a job for their daily bread and butter.

Athulya Senior Care and Pallium India collaborate to provide palliative care services for seniors in South India
We are pleased to share that Athulya Senior Care and Pallium India collaborated on Monday, 20th February, 2023, to begin provisioning palliative care services across south India.
Athulya Senior Care Center is said to be a leading senior care center, with operations currently in Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Hyderabad and Coimbatore.
As per the collaboration, Pallium India will train the doctors, nursing staff, and other key members at all of Athulya’s Senior Care centres with a focus on providing training on pain and symptom management, end-of-life care, and communication skills, among other essential areas.
The partnership recognises the growing ageing population and the rising prevalence of serious health-related suffering in the country and aims to make palliative care services available to those in need. The collaboration therefore intends to deliver the highest quality of palliative care to seniors in South India.
The collaboration was formalised in the presence of Ms J Krishna Kavya (Founder and Director of Marketing, Athulya Senior Care), Mr Srinivasan G (Founder CEO, Athulya Senior Care), Dr Sreedevi Warrier (Head, Education and Skill Building, Pallium India), and Dr Veereswara Raju (Consultant, Palliative Care Services, Athulya Senior Care).

Dr Sarita Singh and Dr Manish Kumar Singh publish ‘CBS Handbook on Pain and Palliative Care’ on 3rd January, 2023
Dr Sarita Singh (Professor and Unit in-charge, Pain and Palliative Medicine, Kings George Medical College, Lucknow) and Dr Manish Kumar Singh (Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management Unit, Kings George Medical College, Lucknow) have launched their book, ‘CBS Handbook on Pain and Palliative Care’ on Tuesday, 3rd January, 2023.
The authors share that the book aims to bring an insight into the various aspects of palliative care, which will help palliative care professionals improve the quality of life of their patients who are suffering from intractable symptoms. Additionally, the authors share this to be the first book on Pain & Palliative Care for Nurses based on Indian Scenario, which also includes nursing approaches in cancer pain and various nursing management strategies.
The foreward for the book has been written by Dr M R Rajagopal (Founder and Chairman, Pallium India).
