Dr Sushma Bhatnagar recognised by the IASP
We are thrilled to share that Dr Sushma Bhatnagar (President, IAPC; Chief, Dr BRA IRCH, AIIMS New Delhi) has been honoured and recognised by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) by way of granting her a honorary membership.
The recognition was provided to Dr Sushma in recognition of her outstanding contribution to pain relief for suffering in pain. The recognition provides Dr Sushma with access to all IASP member benefits and also entitles her with free registration to the much awaited World Congress on Pain for life.
On the occasion Dr Sushma shares, “I am deeply honoured to be recognised as one of the 6 awardees for this year. This recognition motivates me to continue my efforts in the realms of education, service and research of pain. Through my humble efforts, I hope to be able to alleviate the discomfort and pain of those suffering from serious health suffering across the globe.”
The only other doctor practising in India to receive this prestigious recognition till date is Dr Rajagopal M R (Chairman Emeritus, Pallium India).

Bagchi-Karunashraya Palliative Care Center, Bhubaneswar, inaugurated their 110 bedded in-patient services on 10th April, 2024
It is with immense pleasure that we share that the 110 bedded Bagchi-Karunashraya Palliative Care Center (BKPCC) at Bhubaneswar, Odisha, was inaugurated on Wednesday, 10th April, 2024.
In addition to the already ongoing free home care services, the newly inaugurated center will provide free-of-charge palliative care services and continue to resonate the same mandate as that of its parent body, the Bangalore Hospice Trust – Karunashraya, to alleviate pain and sufferings of terminally ill patients by providing them the best possible quality of life.
Those with advanced stage cancer with no further curative treatment possible, those with excessive symptom burden, those in need of wound dressing, or those requiring End of Life Care are eligible to avail the services at the new center. Respite care is also provided to caregivers of patients being treated by the center.
Dr Nagesh Simha (Medical Director, BKPCC) shares, “It is such an overwhelming moment for us to be able to expand our wings and cater to the needs of those suffering in and around Odisha. With support from regional stakeholders, and by drawing from years of our rich experience in rendering care at Karunashraya, Bengaluru, we assure everyone that we will provide quality and compassionate care, along with comfort and dignity to our patients. On behalf of the team, I also thank Mrs and Mr Bagchi for their trust in us and for their magnanimous generosity which made this project a reality”.

Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children and Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society signed an MoU on 15th April, 2024, to improve palliative care service delivery in Hyderabad
We are delighted to share that Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children and the Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society (PRPCS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, 15th April, 2024, at the Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children, Hyderabad, Telangana.
The MoU symbolises and formalises the trust, dedication and continuous collaboration that has been in existence between both organisations for the past 5 years. The MoU aims to further expand the scope of children’s palliative care including perinatal and neonatal care, and paediatric palliative care training, capacity building, and research. The collaboration will also facilitate the seamless and hassle-free networking between Niloufer Hospital and PRPCS to ensure continuity in care for pediatric patients and their families across different care settings.
The MoU was signed by Dr Thota Usha Rani (Medical Superintendent, Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children) and Mr J N Jaganath (President, PRPCS) in the presence of Dr Alladi Aparna (Head, Paediatrics), Dr M Alimelu (Head, Neonatology), Dr S Anitha (Head, Obstetrics and Gynaecology) Dr B V Manjula (Founder and Secretary, PRPCS), Dr Gayatri Palat (Founder and Executive Committee Member, PRPCS), and Dr Priya Kumari (Founder and Treasurer, PRPCS).
When we reached out to Dr Gayatri Palat, she shares, “This collaboration primarily assures our children and their families of continuous support under all the programmes of the NGO and the hospital based palliative care in the form of out-patient, in-patient, home care and hospice care. Additionally, the collaboration also offers us the scope to expand our palliative care program in terms of academic programmes for the post graduates (Classes and thesis topics) and also become eligible to apply for a fellowship course in paediatric palliative care affiliated to the Telangana State University.”

Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust celebrated 24 years of service on 16th April, 2024
We are happy to share that Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust celebrated their 24th Annual Day on Tuesday, 16th April, 2024.
On the occasion, several donors, well-wishers, friends, volunteers and also the staff of the Trust were invited to share their thoughts and experiences from their journey with the Trust.
Located in Chennai, the charitable trust has been rendering high quality palliative care to those in need of such services through their Home care services, Out-patient services, In-patient services and their lymphedema clinic. The team is managed by a group of committed doctors, nurses, counsellors, physiotherapists and volunteers. Till date the Trust has been able to care for over 5000 patients and their caregivers.
Dr Mallika Tiruvadanan (Founder, Lakshmi Pain and Palliative Care Trust) shares, “We thank all our supporters for their trust in us. Our team is dedicated to engage in and pursue the required actions to make palliative care available to all those in need of such services across Tamil Nadu”.

AIIMS Raebareli inaugurated their Palliative Care OPD on 23rd April, 2024
It is exciting to share that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, inaugurated their palliative care Out Patient Department (OPD) from Tuesday, 23rd April, 2024.
The OPD was inaugurated by Dr Arvind Rajvanshi (Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Raebareli), and will cater to the needs of oncology patients once a week, every Tuesday.
Services at the OPD will be delivered by a team of three committed doctors (Dr Bhupendra Singh, Dr Gaurav Trivedi and Dr Kali Charan) and two nurses (Ms Jyoti Yadav and Ms Shweta Yadav) who are trained in palliative care. The palliative care OPD will be run jointly by the Department of Anaesthesia and Department of Radiation Oncology.
On this momentous occasion, the team shares, “We are delighted to be setting up this palliative care OPD. Till date we were providing palliative care services mainly in the ICU. The rising need for palliative care services motivated us to set up this new service. We thank the management of AIIMS Raebareli for this support towards this new service which we hope will flourish to become a stand alone unit in due course”.
