The DMA confers Dr Sushma Bhatnagar, with the ‘Eminent Medical & Health Education Teacher Award’ 2022

We are delighted to share that Dr Sushma Bhatnagar, (President, IAPC; Chief, Dr. B.R.A IRCH, AIIMS, Delhi; Head, National Cancer Institute, Jhajjar;) was the recipient of the Delhi Medical Association’s (DMA), ‘Eminent Medical & Education and Teacher Award 2022’.

Dr Bhatnagar received the award on Sunday, 4th September, 2022, at the Maulana Azad Medical College Auditorium, New Delhi.

The DMA presented the award on the occasion of Teachers Day Award Ceremony to acknowledge and recognise Dr Bhatnagar’s outstanding contribution, hard work and dedication to the field of medical education and education of the public at large on health issues.

 A humbled Dr Bhatnagar mentioned that this recognition has only motivated her to work harder and deliver the best that she is capable of.

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, receives approval from the NMC to offer MD in Palliative Medicine

We are excited to share that Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, has been approved by the National Medical Council (NMC) to offer MD in Palliative Medicine (2 seats).

The institute will be the first in Kerala to offer a Post Graduate course in Palliative Medicine.

On achieving this milestone, a very elated Dr Shoba Nair (Professor and Head of the Department, AIMS, Kochi), said, “The much awaited post graduate training  in Palliative Medicine will go a long way towards improving the management of patients and their families who are suffering with chronic diseases. We are excited and assure the health care community that we will provide world class training in Pain management and Palliative Medicine for our country’s young physicians”.

Sparsh Hospice, Hyderabad, celebrates 11 years of alleviating pain

It is heartening to share that on Thursday, 15th September, 2022, Sparsh Hospice, Hyderabad, celebrated 11 years of alleviating pain and rendering palliative care to its patients and caregivers.

To commemorate the occasion, Team Sparsh Hospice, pledged to re-dedicate themselves to expand the reach of their services and serve more people. The team also celebrated the occasion by acknowledging the dedication and hard work of their staff and thanked them for their selfless contribution.

The standalone hospice renders free palliative care through their in-patient, home-care and out-patient services. Sparsh began its journey in September 2011, with the vision to alleviate the pain and suffering of those suffering from serious health-related issues. Over the years, the hospice has grown from a 12 bedded facility to an 82 bedded state-of-art facility in Hyderabad, with 6 home care vans to care for patients in and around Hyderabad and with a soon to be inaugurated dedicated paediatric ward. They also provide care through video consultations for patients in rural areas.

The hospice has served an approx. 5,500 families and is one of the first facilities in united Andhra Pradesh. The center also partners with various sakeholders such as the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Association of Elder’s Homes, the CR Foundation, Seva Bharathi and others to improve their service reach.

Three palliative care centers receive ESMO accreditation

We are delighted to announce that Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, the Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (BIACH & RI), Hyderabad, and the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Karad, have been recognised as ESMO Designated Centres for Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care in 2022.

Palliative care services at these centers are being led by Dr Raghavendra Ramanjulu (Lead Consultant, Pain, Palliation and Rehabilitation, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru), Dr Praneeth Suvvari (Consultant Onco-Anaesthesia, Pain and Palliative Medicine, Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Hyderabad) and Dr Anand Gudur (Professor and Head, Dept. of Oncology and Palliative Care, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Karad).

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) centers Accreditation program recognises cancer centres that provide highly integrated oncology and palliative care services with the goal of improving research, education and clinical practice by setting standards for service development.

Cankids KidsCan inaugurates a State Care Coordination Centre and a home-away-from-home for children in Chennai, on 17th September, 2022

It is reassuring to know that Cankids KidsCan has launched ‘Snehalaya’, a Home away from home for children suffering from cancer in Chennai on Saturday, 17th September, 2022, in association with HDFC life, Data Patterns and Access Health Care. The center will also function as ‘Smanvay Kendra’, the institution’s State Care Coordination centre.

Mr. M. Subramaniam (Minister for Health & Family Welfare Department, Govt. of Tamil Nadu) inaugurated the center and shared “It is crucial that Children with Cancer survive and thrive and get the best Access to Care. We are happy to partner with NGO’s like Cankids who are able to hold the hands of the families, guide them from primary health centre, tertiary care centres and provide them financial, medical, social and psychological support”.

The newly inaugurated facility will enable the cancer affected children and their families to stay at a place so that they could continue their treatment. The facility can accommodate up to 24 families, along with a plethora of services like patient navigation facility, psychological & nutrition counselling, nutritional support, both formal and informal education support, physiotherapy and much more.

Their MoU with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, toward strengthening Childhood Cancer care and support, allows one to also avail these services by calling the State helpline number 104.
