The Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC) deeply mourns the passing of Prof. Akram Lal, a pioneer in Palliative Care and Pain Medicine in India.

Prof. Lal’s unwavering dedication and visionary leadership significantly shaped the foundation and growth of the IAPC. Notably, he served as the President of IAPC between 1996 and 1997, and was a pioneering figure in the establishment of this organisation, playing a crucial role in advancing the field and advocating for compassionate care across the country.

We honour his remarkable legacy and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy continues to inspire and guide us.

Early Life & Education

  • Born: 1st March, 1939, in Rupapur, Varanasi 
  • Graduated: 1st MBBS batch from GSVM Medical college (1956)
  • Post Graduation: 1st MD from Department of Anaesthesiology, Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi (1961)

Palliative Care Journey

  • Began: 1994, with Prof. K. Pandey (the Founder President, IAPC)
  • Pioneer of Palliative Care in India
  • President IAPC between 1996 and 1997
  • Contributed significantly to the progress of Palliative Care in India and IAPC

Leadership & Achievements

  • President: Indian Association of Palliative Care, 1996-1997
  • Co- Founder: Indian Society for Study of Pain in 1984
  • President: Indian Society of Anaesthesiology, 2004-2005
  • Editor: Indian Journal of Anaesthesiology for over a decade
  • Founder Principal: Government Medical College, Haldwani, Uttarakhand, 2002-2004
