Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, Mysuru, Karnataka

The Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) celebrated World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD) by hosting a variety of programs to generate awareness about palliative care and to emphasize the WHPCD theme “Leave No One Behind”.

  1. A 2 hour virtual Panel discussion was organised on “The Role of early integration of Palliative care in the management of chronic illness”. This discussion brought together, doctors from different disciplines, health care facilitators, patients and caregivers under a single panel to debate upon topics such as the need for early integration, its advantages, barriers and challenges, the unmet need and the demand and supply of palliative care, the role of a community, the NPPC policy (palliative care at health and wellness centres) etc. Over 100 participants from across Karnataka actively participated in this very interactive program.

  2. The All India Radio Station, Mysuru, FM 100.6, broadcasted a pre-recorded 10 minute audio byte in Kannada (regional language) by Dr. M R Seetharam, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, VMH Saragur. The byte aimed to sensitize the community regarding palliative care, SVYM’s model of palliative care and the community’s role in providing Palliative care.

  3. Janadhwanii, the Community Radio Station broadcasted a ‘Live Phone-in program’ on “Equity in access to Palliative Care”. The program created oppurtunites for callers to engage in one-to-one discussions with both, Dr. Vibha, Senior program manager, Palliative Care Mysuru and Mr. Ramakrishna Mudre, Honorary Director, Palliative Care Centre, Mysuru.

  4. A drawing competition on the subject “Palliative Care” was organised for school children across Mysuru. Students from 6th standard to the 10th standard participated in the same.

  5. SVYM, in collaboration with the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, and Rotary Midtown Hassan, organised an awareness session with support from palliative care doctors on “Nutrition for palliative care patients”. 450 eggs were distributed as part of this event.
