East Zone: World Hospice & Palliative Care Day Celebration at
Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute and Ruma Abedona Hospice,
Kolkata, West Bengal
The Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) and the Ruma Abedona Hospice, Kolkata, jointly celebrated the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD) by organizing an awareness program about palliative care for health professionals, patients and the general community.
The program was held at the Ruplal Nandy Memorial Cancer Research Centre (RNMCRC), Chandennagore, the proposed site for a 15 bed Hospice that will be coming up shortly.
The program was inaugurated by Dr. Jayanta Chakrabarti, Director, CNCI.
Dr. Ranajit Mandal, HOD, Pain and Palliative Care and Gynaecological Oncology, CNCI and Officer In-Charge RNMCRC, Mr. Santanu Chakraborty, Director, Ruma Abedona Hospice and Dr. Debasish Jatua, In-Charge, Pain and Palliative Care, CNCI, elaborated and expanded the theme of WHPCD during their addresses and also shared their vision for the upcoming hospice.
Mrs. Meheli Chakraborty, CEO, Ruma Abedona Hospice, presented the results of a survey which aimed to assess the equity in access to palliative care among the study cohort of oncology and non-oncology patients.
A collage showcasing snippets from questionnaires administered to patients to enquire about their understanding of the concept of palliative care was displayed during the program.
The program was attended by the various other Heads of the Departments of all the Medical Specialties at the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, as a way to show solidarity towards the WHPCD theme of leaving no one behind.
The day’s celebrations ended with a lovely musical event and a sumptuous lunch that was sponsored by CNCI.
