Successful completion of the ELNEC course by AIIMS, Bathinda

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda, in collaboration with the End-of-Life Care Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) India, successfully conducted the ELNEC course from Tuesday, 16th November, 2021, to Thursday, 18th November, 2021. The ELNEC project is a national education initiative to improve palliative care and is a partnership between the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Washington, DC and the City of Hope. This course was a one-of-a-kind event that empowered 108 nurses by educating them on palliative care principles.
The event was conducted under the able guidance of Prof. (Dr.) D. K. Singh, Honorable Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Bathinda. A thorough scientific and academic program was organised by the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, AIIMS, Bathinda.
Sr Hanife MacGamwell initiated the ELNEC course. Sr Hanife is a well known Oncology-Palliative Care Nurse Specialist who has worked in clinics across the world and has been working in India for over 25 years with children, adults and their families. She emphasized the need for increased awareness and access to palliative care in India. Other well-known national faculty members include Ms Nileem Sharad Shingade (AIIMS, New Delhi), Mr Arvind Kumar (AIIMS, Jodhpur), Mr Ram Swaroop (AIIMS, Jodhpur), Ms Mamta Parihar (S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur), and Ms Manwinder Kaur (DMC Ludhiana), who highlighted teaching nurses about their vital role in interdisciplinary teams, in improving End of life care for patients in all critical care settings, as well as enhancing the experience of family members witnessing the dying process of their loved ones.
All participants were actively engaged throughout the course including their participation in role plays to depict various issues like symptom control, patient-physician communication and end-of-life care. The course culminated with the distribution of certificates and felicitation of the faculty. The participants expressed their appreciation for this opportunity and described the course as commendable and excellent.
