Grab your last chance to apply for the IAPC’s course onManaging Psychosocial issues of patients with chronic illnesses in Palliative Care settings’. The virtual course will be delivered over a week in December (3 hours over weekends; 2 hours over weekdays) between Sunday, 4th December, 2022, and Saturday, 10th December, 2022 (both dates included).

The course aims to facilitate participants to understand the psychosocial and spiritual issues that impact the quality of life of patients with chronic illness and their families. This course will further equip participants with the basic skills required to counsel and communicate with patients / caregivers in such situations.

Doctors (MBBS or BDS), Nurses (BSc Nursing or GNM), Counsellors and Social Workers (BSc or MSc in Psychology, MSW or Diploma in Counselling) are eligible to apply for the course.

Apply before 25th December, 2022, for the IAPC’s ‘Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care’

Applications are invited for the 6th online batch of the IAPC’s most sought after and popular course, the Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care (CCEPC). The CCEPC is a basic course in palliative care for doctors and nurses which aims to inculcate the principles of palliative care in every day practice for doctors and nurses to improve patient care through proper communication and effective management of difficult symptoms.

The course will be delivered in two parts: A mandatory theory ‘Part A’ component and a practical hands-on ‘Part B’ component (recommended but optional).

These theory classes will be held as half day sessions over 3 weekends (Saturdays: 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Sundays: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The dates for the January 2023 batch: 7th, 8th, 21st, 22nd, 28th and 29th of January, 2023.

Select Clinical sessions will be held separately for Doctors (MBBS, BDS) and Nurses (BSc Nursing, GNM).

The last date to register for the course is Sunday, 25th December, 2022.

19 candidates trained successfully in the IAPC’s ‘Certificate Course in Palliative Care for Volunteers’ conducted in October and November, 2022

We are delighted to share that 19 enthusiastic candidates completed their virtual and theoretical ‘Part A’ training of the maiden batch of IAPC’s ‘Certificate Course in Palliative Care for Volunteers’ over two weekends.

The 16-hour ‘Part A’ component of the course was delivered as half day sessions between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. over two weekends in October (29th and 30th October, 2022), and over two weekends in November (5th and 6th November, 2022).

Post successfully completing the ‘Part A’ component of the course, candidates will now proceed towards the ‘Part B’ component of the program, which is a 16-hour observership in a palliative care unit.

The IAPC and the Dharamshila Rahat Medical Centre, New Delhi, jointly sensitise 55 Bio Medical Science students on volunteering for Palliative care on 12th and 13th November, 2022

55 volunteers trained over 2 days in a power packed interactive session in the basics of palliative care, jointly organised by the Dharamshila Rahat Medical Centre, New Delhi, and the IAPC, between Saturday, 12th November, 2022, and Sunday, 13th November, 2022.

This two day successful, in-person volunteers training program was conducted at the newly constructed Training Hall of the Dharamshila Rahat Medical Centre, which houses a 37 bedded palliative care centre equipped with state of the art facilities.

The local resource persons shared their rich experiences while imparting knowledge about the basic concepts and principles of palliative care with special emphasis on avenues for volunteer contribution to the Multi Disciplinary Teams of Palliative Care.

Dr S Khanna (Director, Dharamshila Rahat Supportive and Palliative Care Centre) welcomed the gathering on the occasion with utmost grace and poise. In her words, “This palliative care volunteer training certificate course will train people to actively participate and support any patient suffering from chronic serious illness”.

Dr Sushma Bhatnagar (President, IAPC) while delivering the Keynote address shared, “Almost 57% of people who suffer from various diseases need palliative care which aims at bringing comfort to patients by means of holistic care”. She went on to share that it was great for the IAPC to partner with the Dharamshila Rahat Supportive and Palliative Care Centre to further strengthen the development of palliative care in the country.

Nurses from the 20th CNE Workshop organised by the Kalawati Saran Children Hospital, New Delhi, sensitised in basics of palliative care on 2nd November, 2022

The Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Cell, at Kalawati Saran Children Hospital (KSCH), New Delhi, had organized its 20th CNE Workshop with the theme ‘Nurses a force for change: A vital resource for quality healthcare’ between Tuesday, 1st November, 2022, to Tuesday, 8th November, 2022. As part of this workshop, DNipCare presented sessions on ‘Nursing and the future of palliative care’ on Wednesday, 2nd November, 2022.

Dr. Saveena G Raheja (Incharge, Palliative Pain Clinic, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi), Dr. Madhu Dayal (Professor & Consultant, Palliative Pain Clinic,  VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi) and Mr. K V Hamza (General Secretary, DNipCare) delivered presentations on Palliative Care for the participating Nursing Professionals of KSCH. Topics covered during these presentations include an Introduction and the need for palliative care, Pain Management: Role of Nurses, Nursing and Future of Palliative Care etc.

While Dr. Rathi Balachandran (Sr. Faculty, College of Nursing, Ex.ADG (N)) felicitated the program, Ms. Jeena Pradeep (Coordinator, CNE Workshop) and Mr Suresh TP (Secretary, DNipCare) coordinated the event.


The Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Pain and Palliative Care Chapter, successfully organised a panel discussion on ‘Pediatric Palliative Care’ on 2nd November, 2022

An interactive and enriching panel discussion on ‘Pediatric Palliative Care: What a pediatrician should know’ was organised by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Pain and Palliative Care Chapter, on Wednesday, 2nd November, 2022.

The online panel discussion was attended by approx. a number of pediatricians.

Dr Armida Fernandez (Retired Professor and Dean, LTMG Hospital, Mumbai), Dr Mohammad Ishak Tayoob (Pediatric Palliative Care Consultant, PRPCS, Hyderabad), Dr Ruchi Nanavati (Professor Emeritus, Neonatology, Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai), Dr PG Hariprasad (Professor, Pediatrics, Govt. Medical College, Ernakulam) and Dr Spandana Rayala (Consultant, MNJIO & RCC, Hyderabad) were the panellists of the rich webinar which entailed thoughtful discussions on An overview of pediatric palliative care, Pain in children, Palliative care for newborns, and the various opportunities to learn pediatric palliative care.

The session concluded with the speakers answering queries from the audience.


60 candidates participate in the 3-day training program conducted jointly by AIIMS Jodhpur, and ELNEC, at Jodhpur, Rajasthan, between 3rd and 5th November, 2022

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur in partnership with the End-of-life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), conducted a 3-day ELNEC program at AIIMS Jodhpur, between Thursday, 3rd November, 2022 and Saturday, 5th November, 2022.

A total of 60 candidates (clinical nurses, nursing students, nurse educators and social workers) participated in the program.

The 3-day interactive sessions aimed to educate the participants on the principles and practices of palliative care and empower them to provide quality care for patients with advanced illness at their end of life. The program included concepts of End of Life Nursing Care, its vital role in interdisciplinary teams, ways of improving End of Life Care for patients across settings and role plays on nurse-patient therapeutic communication, breaking bad news, assessment of pain control, wound dressing, symptom management, how to conduct bereavement visits and ways to deliver affordable home care in poor settings.

The training was delivered by an expert Faculty group represented by Sr Hanife MacGamwell (Nursing Education Coordinator, IAPC and ELNEC India), Mr Arvind Kumar (Nursing Officer, AIIMS Jodhpur), Mr Ramswaroop Garwa (Nursing Officer, AIIMS Jodhpur), Mr Jadish Parjapat (Nursing Officer, AIIMS Jodhpur) and Ms Mamta Parihar (Nursing Tutor, SN Nursing College, Jodhpur).

All participants received certificates at the end of the training period.


ELNEC India and IAPC, jointly deliver a 3-day training program for clinicians at Pulwama, Kashmir, between 7th and 9th November, 2022

The End-of-life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) in collaboration with the IAPC and the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, conducted a 3-day in-person ELNEC program at the Government District Hospital, Pulwama, Kashmir, between Monday 7th November, 2022, and Wednesday, 9th November, 2022. 

60 participants (clinical nurses, nursing students, nurse educators, social workers and doctors), from different blocks of Anantnag District, participated in this training program organized by Dr Yousuf Tak (Nodal Officer, NPPC, Kashmir). A few volunteers from Kerala were also a part of the program.

Dr Sushma Bhatnagar (President, IAPC) inaugurated the program and inspired the ELNEC participants, the doctors from Jammu and Srinagar, and the Government officials with her enthusiastic interaction and her lecture on the integration of palliative care.

The participants were enthusiastic, caring and self-motivated individuals who learnt a lot about end of life nursing care during the three day interactive sessions. Many doctors requested the team to conduct ELNEC core training and awareness programs.

The program will delivered by ELNEC’s expert Faculty, Sr. Hanife MacGamwell (Nursing Education Coordinator, IAPC and ELNEC India), Mr Jadish Parjapat (Nursing Officer, Pain and Palliative Care and Home based Palliative Care; ELNEC Trainer, AIIMS Jodhpur) and Mr Ramswaroop Garwa (Nursing Officer and ELNEC trainer, AIIMS Jodhpur).

The three day training program concluded with certificates being distributed to the participants.


TWCC and PRPCS jointly sensitise 165 Doctors and Nurses at Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, in the basics of palliative care on 8th November, 2022

Two World’s Cancer Collaboration (TWCC), Canada, and the Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society (PRPCS), Hyderabad jointly conducted a half-day sensitisation workshop for 165 Doctors and Nurses at the Government General Hospital and Medical College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, 8th November, 2022.

The very interactive Continuing Medical Education (CME) program provided an overview of palliative care and was attended by 15 Doctors and 150 Nurses from the Government General Hospital and Medical College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh.

The sensitization sessions were presented by Dr Gillian Fyles (Director and Senior lead-India, TWCC, Canada), Ms Jessica Baker (Register Nurse Practitioner, Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada), Dr Ishak Tayoob (Consultant, Pediatric Palliative Care, PRPCS), Dr Bharath (Medical Officer, Government General Hospital, Kurnool), Mr Swarup (Nurse In-charge, PRPCS) and Mr Sandeep (Nursing Officer, Government General Hospital, Kurnool).

The sensitisation program was organised and facilitated efficiently by Dr CSK Prakash (Medical Superintendent and Principal, GGH; Professor, Radiotherapy, GGH; In-charge, Palliative Care Unit, GGH).


Panel Discussion on ‘Palliative care – The missing link in continuum of care’ included in the 3rd IAPSM Young Leaders National Conclave, at Bhubaneswar on 11th November, 2022

The Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) and AIIMS Bhubaneswar, had jointly organised the 3rd IAPSM Young Leaders National Conclave, at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, on Friday, 11th November, 2022, and Saturday, 12th November, 2022.

The first day of the conference included a panel discussion on ‘Palliative care – The missing link in continuum of care’. The panel was represented by Dr Atreyi Ganguli (National Professional Officer, Mental Health and Substance Abuse), WHO Country Office for India), Dr Srinagesh Simha (Founder, Medical Director, Karunashraya), and Dr Satyajeet Misra (HOD Anaesthesia, AIIMS Bhuvaneshwar).

It is excellent that the IAPSM provided expert PC physicians with a platform and an opportunity to create awareness and sensitise the young Community Medicine Physicians from across the country, regarding the concept and principles of palliative care.


Coimbatore Cancer Foundation sensitizes 225 lay people in the basics of palliative care in October and November, 2022

The Coimbatore Cancer Foundation (CCF) constantly undertakes projects and programmes to educate, support, and increase awareness about cancer and palliative care among the community.

Such awareness programmes are conducted in observance of occasions such as the National Cancer Awareness Day (7th November), Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) and target people from both rural and urban Coimbatore by also including various educational and medical institutions.

Over the past two months, CCF has been able to sensistize 225 lay people in the basics of palliative care in October and November, 2022, via ten separate sensitization programs. These programs usually include sensitising the community about the concept of palliative care, the need for utilising palliative care and the benefit of integrating it in the course of cancer care treatment.

CCF therefore aims to inspire change and reduce the global impact of cancer to create a healthier world, free of cancer.


Update from IAPC Academy

Report on activities in November

The Palliative Care fraternity enjoyed 4 lectures from the ‘IAPC Academy’s Online Lecture Series 6’ in November. In Series 6, a total of 35 lectures will be delivered by students of MD and DNB in Palliative Medicine from across the country and moderated by a Faculty from their respective center.

The first lecture of the month, a comprehensive presentation on ‘Cancer Pain Syndromes’ was delivered effectively by Dr Pratibha Jha and moderated by Dr Mithilesh Kumar Mishra. The following session was an interesting lecture on ‘Opioid induced hyperalgesia’ delivered by Dr Rabiya Abdu Razak and moderated by Dr Seema Mishra. The third session for the month was a fantastic presentation on ‘Opioids and the immune system: Friends or Foe’, delivered by Dr Kashish Vats and moderated by Dr Sachin Ravji Gunde. The lectures for the month concluded with a superb presentation on ‘Cancer induced venous thrombosis’ delivered by Dr Arjun M Pillai and moderated by Dr Gayatri Palat.
