International Nurses Day: Celebrating our Palliative Care Nurses

Sukoon Nilaya Palliative Care Center, Mumbai
Ms Maria Carvalho, has been a Palliative Care Nurse champion since the last 25 years. She first started supporting the Palliative care program as the Principal of the Nursing College, Tata Memorial Centre, as a Lecturer in all the teaching programs for Doctors, Nurses and Social Workers since 1996, all over the country.
Post retirement, she joined the Department of Palliative Medicine as a Volunteer Paediatric Palliative Care Nurse, where she continues her teaching expertise and service activities along with research. At present, she also is a Stoma Care Nurse at the Ostomy Association of India.
Ms Carvalho takes the lead in the teaching activities at the newly inaugurated Sukoon Nilaya Palliative Care Center for non cancer.
She has also taken the lead in creating a Palliative Care Nursing Diploma and a course for Nursing Aides in Palliative Care.
