Job Description:

JOB PURPOSE

Provide the highest quality of compassionate palliative care to patients, offering sensitive support to their families. Assist the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in all medical activities of Ganga Prem Hospice, both on- and off-campus, as required. Ensure best-in-class service delivery to patients and caregivers, functioning as a highly adept medical officer with an organized, detail-oriented, and solution-driven approach.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • MBBS degree from a recognised institution
  • MD/DNB in Palliative Medicine or Family Medicine/Internal Medicine is desirable but not mandatory
  • Additional certification or fellowship in Palliative Care/Hospice Medicine is highly preferred

EXPERIENCE (YEARS AND NATURE)

  • Minimum of 2 years to a maximum of 8 years of clinical experience in live hospital and/or hospice settings
  • Registered with the relevant medical council
  • Strong knowledge of clinical procedures and patient care
  • Experience preferred in palliative care, oncology, pain management, or hospice settings, but not mandatory
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, and hospital management applications

SALARY RANGE

  • INR 50,000 – 80,000 per month (all-inclusive, gross) [commensurate with years of experience]

Ganga Prem Hospice has created, in its organisation structure, a critical position of Palliative Care Physician, contributing to the Hospice team with passion for palliative care and healthcare administration, utmost integrity, foresight, and compassion, and keeping in view the underlying ethos of the hospice – that of making patients and their families feel supported and offering them top-of-the-line palliative care with abundant caring, are some of the qualities that will be expected of the candidate.

The Board and Management will expect the candidate to raise the care and service standards at the Hospice, and be mindful that a charity runs on optimisation of existing resources, and goodwill of donors and the project’s beneficiaries. Therefore, according due importance to every aspect of the hospice’s medical spend, administration, and developing long-standing positive relations with all internal and external stakeholders is vital. The primary expectation from the candidate is the ability to ably assist the chief medical officer (CMO) in each and every task proactively as well as excel in those tasks that are directly delegated by the COO, and function independently when the situation demands.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO)

Key Result Areas (KRAs)/ Key Activities

Clinical Palliative Care:

  • Provide comprehensive medical care to terminally ill cancer patients in in-patient, home care, and outpatient settings
  • Assess and manage pain and distressing symptoms, ensuring optimal comfort and quality of life for patients
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of nurses, social workers, and counsellors
  • Conduct regular medical rounds in the in-patient facility and home care visits to provide continued medical oversight and support
  • Provide emergency and crisis intervention for hospice patients when required
  • Offer guidance and emotional support to patients and families on disease progression, symptom management, and end-of-life care planning

Home Care & Community Outreach:

  • Conduct regular home visits for patients who prefer receiving care in familiar surroundings, ensuring continuity of care
  • Train and mentor caregivers and family members in symptom management, psychosocial support, and basic palliative care techniques
  • Collaborate with community health workers, NGOs, and local healthcare providers to enhance access to palliative care in underserved areas
  • Actively participate in free palliative care camps, offering medical support to marginalised populations with limited access to healthcare
  • Advocate for home-based palliative care as an integral part of healthcare services, ensuring patient dignity and comfort in their final stages

Medical Administration & Education:

  • Maintain accurate, meticulous, and ethical patient records and documentation, ensuring compliance with medical and hospice care standards
  • Ensure strict adherence to palliative care guidelines and protocols, aligning with both Indian and global best practices
  • Actively contribute to teaching, training, and mentoring medical interns, nursing staff, and volunteers to strengthen their palliative care competencies
  • Participate in continuous professional development, including attending relevant conferences, workshops, and certification programs in palliative medicine
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for medical care at the hospice
  • Engage in knowledge-sharing initiatives, research activities, and quality improvement programs to enhance hospice care delivery

Organisational Growth & Development:

  • Contribute to the strategic vision of expanding and enhancing palliative and hospice care services at Ganga Prem Hospice
  • Advocate for the integration of palliative care into mainstream oncology, geriatrics, and general medical practice within the Indian healthcare system
  • Assist in the development and refinement of hospice policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality improvement initiatives to ensure continuous enhancement of patient care
  • Actively participate in fundraising, grant writing, and donor engagement initiatives to sustain and expand hospice services, ensuring long-term financial viability
  • Support the growth of psychosocial and spiritual care programs, integrating holistic healing approaches to enhance patient and family well-being
  • Collaborate with the Board, senior management, and external stakeholders to strengthen advocacy, partnerships, and awareness campaigns for palliative care
