WHPCD 2023 is celebrated with a daylong programme in Dr B Barooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati. An “Awareness cum Compassionate Care” program for the inmates and staffs of Guwahati Central Jail was organized by the Department of Palliative Medicine of BBCI at 9am in Guwahati Central Jail. Dr Kabindra Bhagabati, In-charge and Medical Officer has delivered a talk on compassionate communities in palliative care. A team of doctors and health workers headed by Dr Abhigyan Sarma has cared for the terminally ill inmates of central jail Guwahati. Kalyan Choudhury, the jailor, offered heartful gratitude for the program and for taking care of the inmates.

Another program named “Compassionate Communities” involving the NGOs, Organizations, village committees, philanthropists, volunteers was also organized by the department at 11am in the Academic Hub of the Institute. Around 65 participants from different organizations and NGOs have expressed their willingness to work hand in hand with Palliative Medicine Department to enhance the community involvement in supportive care. Mr. Hari Prasad Borah, a volunteer from Mayang has been felicitated for his outstanding volunteerism in Palliative care for decades.

Dr. B.B. Borthakur, Director of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute has emphasized on the community involvement for continuous and compassionate care of the cancer patients. On that day, “Fahmida Yasmin Rehman Memorial Cancer Trust” has sponsored the lunch for in-patients of the Institute.
