South Zone: World Hospice & Palliative Care Day Celebration at

Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

The Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar, Chennai celebrated the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day by conducting the ELNEC (End-of-life-care Nursing Education Consortium) program on Paediatric palliative care for Nurses across the State. The 3 day offline (physical) program was conducted on the 8th, 9th, and 10th October 2021,  at the Cancer Institute.

Nurses are the key players in the care pathway but are seldom acknowledged or included in critical decision making processes. Empowering these nurses not only lighten the burden but also allow for the effective utilisation of our already stretched resources. The idea was to therefore create awareness on the scope of nursing in providing palliative care and the extent to which it can actually improve the quality of life of patients.

The program was sponsored by CIPLA Palliative Care, Pune.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Kalpana Balakrishnan, Head of the Department, Department of Anaesthesiology and Palliative Care, The Cancer Institute, along with Nurse Faculty Sr. Hanife MacGamwell. The boundless energy and enthusiasm of Sr. Hanife coupled with the young nursing trainers, Mr. Sudip and Mr Arvind, inspired the audience and kept them riveted to the presentations which were interspersed with real-life stories. The practical component of the session encouraged participants to put their knowledge into action.

An approx. 40 nurses from across Tamil Nadu actively participated in the session. We hope that they will be the torch bearers for paediatric palliative care in their respective institutions and that some of them will become ELNEC trainers themselves in the future.

The 3 day intense sessions concluded with cake, photos and the distribution of certificates.
